Political Burn-Out

by admin · Comments (0)
11 Dec

I’m an independent voter – technically.

I definitely lean Republican, but a few years ago I got so sick of party politics I formally switched my affiliation to Independent.

So 2012 was the biggy. I will be 100% up-front and tell you that I voted for Mitt Romney and backed him 110%. Simply put, I’m not an Obama fan. You just need to read a couple of my posts on Claimwire to see that. So I not only voted for Mitt, I donated some money as well. I was all-in.

Leading up to November 6th I was a complete Political junkie. I watched Bill O’Reilly almost every night. I listened to Rush every chance I could. I read stories on realclearpolitics.com, and looked at the polls closer than I looked at sports scores.

Now?

I’m bummed out and burned out. Haven’t watched a full hour of O’Reilly, nor listened to more than a few minutes of Rush since Election Night. And do you know what? I don’t miss it at all.

It’s not that I don’t care. I love our country, and believe it to be the greatest country in the world. But, I’m tired, and I feel like my voice is not heard anymore. Something happened on November 6th that hurt deeply. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that way.

I’m sure I’ll get interested again, but right now I’m tired of politics.

The RFP: A Useful Practice, or a Waste of Time?

by admin · Comments (0)
12 Apr

I’ve responded to dozens and dozens of RFPs in the past 18 years. I can’t even imagine how many hours I’ve spent working on them.

I’ll be totally honest, I’m not a big fan of RFPs – at least from the vendor’s perspective. Why? Because the vast majority of RFPs are poorly designed, poorly written, and way too long. Organizations who send out RFPs are just trying to get the best response so they can make the best choice in vendors, right? Yes, that’s true, and I’m sure that is their intention. Unfortunately, in their quest to weed out unwanted vendors they create a mountain of unnecessary and quite useless information.

The Purpose of an RFP

The whole purpose of an RFP, from the buyer’s perspective, is to sift through a large number of potential vendors, and get to a reasonable number of qualified candidates. Once the buyer has narrowed the list down, the next phases of selection begin – demonstrations, presentations, on-site visits, etc.

It doesn’t take a 900 page RFP to help you narrow your list of candidates. Read More→

Steve Jobs and Personal Risk Management

by admin · Comments (0)
09 Apr

I read a great article by Kevin Quinley today on InsuranceThoughtLeadership.com.  The premise of the article was Steve Job’s decision to avoid a potentially life-saving surgery until it was too late. It was a side of the Steve Jobs story I had never heard.

According to Jobs’ biographer Walter Isaacson, Jobs “had an unusual form of pancreatic cancer that was treatable through surgery.” The sad ending to the story is that he went against the advice of his doctors, family, and friends saying he didn’t want “his body to be opened up.”

I’ll let you read Kevin’s excellent article to get the rest of the details. The sad result was Jobs pre-mature death which very possibly could have been avoided.

I, of course, never knew Steve Jobs personally, but I have always been a huge fan. I’m an iPhone, iPad, and Macbook Pro fanatic. I’ve even written a few articles about Apple products, and how much I love them. Like the rest of the world, I felt a great loss when I heard of Jobs’ passing. We will all miss him.

We learned a great deal from Jobs life. I hope we learn from his death as well.

Looking forward to RIMS

05 Apr

I’ve attended the RIMS (Risk and Insurance Management Society) for about 15 years in a row. It’s a great conference. Mostly, I enjoy catching up with people I don’t get to see very often. It’s also a perfect place to meet new people.

This year I won’t be exhibiting, but I’ll be there to meet clients, prospective clients, and friends. Let me know if you’re going to be there and would like to meet. You can email me at steve@claimcompass.com.

“Skinning” ClaimCompass for Company Nurse

by admin · Comments (0)
01 Mar

We have a new project with Company Nurse, one of our excellent customers, to “skin” ClaimCompass and give it a Company Nurse look and feel.

This is a great move on their part – it will give their corporate identity a great lift. Everyone of their customers who access ClaimCompass will see Company Nurse’s logo, colors, content, etc. The screen shot here is the mock-up/proof of concept we used. Looks dang good.

We’ll roll this out in about two weeks.
